Individual Therapy FAQs
For individual counselling, the first session will be an initial assessment. I will ask for information about current concerns, life history and the goals you have for counselling.
Sessions are 50-60 minutes in length.
During your initial assessment we will discuss your goals, and from this we can collaboratively decide how often you come for sessions. During counselling I will regularly check in and discuss how the counselling is going, and if the frequency of sessions fits.
Individual counselling duration varies. I work at the client’s pace, so for some individuals it may be very clear from the start what the problems are, and they may be able to work through them within a shorter period. For others, there may be more complexity. For issues like trauma, PTSD, depression and dependences, it may take longer. It is common to have a period of regular counselling, with the sessions then becoming less frequent until eventually an odd session sporadically is sufficient for the client.
Yes. All sessions are confidential, meaning that I will not share any information provided by you to a third party without prior permission from you, unless I feel that you are a risk to yourself, or others. Or, when required by law. Where possible I will inform you first, should I need to breach confidentiality. In line with GDPR regulations, the information you provide to me will be kept in a secure filing system, accessed only by me. Please note that in accordance with the terms set out by The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society, my work is supervised. My supervisor’s role is to ensure that I am working ethically and professionally. Any work which I discuss with my supervisor remains confidential.
The counselling can be online or in person. The in-person sessions take place on a quiet tree-lined road in Camberley, Surrey, with easy and free parking. Individuals and couples can feel confident that the space is safe, comfortable and private to talk through issues and challenges, and it is conveniently located for clients coming from Frimley, Farnborough, Sandhurst, Bagshot, Lightwater, Yateley, Fleet and the surrounding areas.
Couples Therapy FAQs
For couples counselling there is an initial 3-part assessment process which involves the current narrative, taking a history of the relationship, looking at a conflict discussion, an online questionnaire pack to provide detail on different aspects of the relationship, and an individual session for each of you so I can gain each personal perspective. Once this information is collated, it will be analysed so that I can provide feedback on the areas of strength and weakness and formulate a treatment plan and counselling goals.
For the initial assessment process, the sessions are 70-90 minutes long. Sessions after that are 50-60 minutes long.
At the beginning of couples counselling, it is common to attend weekly. Once some progress has been made, there can be more time left between sessions.
In short, yes. During the couple sessions you will be learning ways of communicating better, handling conflict and strengthening your relationship. It is vital to practise the new tools and techniques learnt, to ensure progress is being made and new patterns are emerging.
Couples counselling duration varies. Some couples manage to work through their issues and rebuild in a few months, and some take longer. For situations like affairs and addiction it may be a longer process.
